Tap Tap Revenge nears million App Store downloads

Tap Tap Revenge seems set to join Facebook with one million downloads of both applications from Apple's App Store.

Developer Tapulous expects to pass the million download benchmark for its free application for the iPhone and the iPod touch at some point this weekend. Facebook achieved a million downloads last week.

Tapulous’s iPhone Twitter client Twinkle has seen around 80,000 installs. Tapulous' own estimates indicate an nstalled base of around 5-6 million iPhones and iPod touches running Software 2.0.

Because Apple prevents any application developer from accessing the iPhone's music library, Tapulous uses songs from indie artists to provide the background music, and provides new songs to gamers which they can download to their iPhone. 2.5 million songs have been downloaded so far, according to the company, which is now speaking to labels with a view to launching a pro version of the game.

The news confirms the level of success being experienced by developers on the iPhone platform at the moment. One developer this week revealed their independently-built iPhone application is now generating them nearly $2,000 per day.

In related news, the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers-run iFund has taken out another investment, this time in start-up game publisher, ngmoco.
