NBC Universal, HD downloads for iTunes

Apple CEO Steve Jobs began today's event with the famous Mark Twain quote that the reports "of my death are greatly exaggerated."

Then he got down to business, revealing that the year-long spat between NBC Universal and Apple has come to an end, with the broadcaster choosing to make all its content once again available through the iTunes Store, including the extremely popular US version of 'The Office'.

Jobs also confirmed that Apple now has over 65 million iTunes accounts and once again stressed the company's position as the number one music retailer.

As anticipated, he also introduced iTunes 8. This offers myriad features, including high definition video downloads through the Store and Genius music recommendations.

What wasn't expected is that the new breed of nano - and the iPod touch (thanks to the newly-released 2.1 software upgrade) are capable of producing Genius recommendations when you're out and about - you don't need the computer.

To demonstrate the new HD feature of iTunes - a feature until now only available through the Apple TV, Jobs said: "Let me show you an HD show. They're really nice, let me show you The Office, which I was playing earlier.
