D&AD: Designers debate mentoring new talent

The D&AD, the educational charity which exists to promote excellence in design and advertising, will host a panel of designers, headed by the D&AD's new Education Chairman, Greg Quinton, on the value and pitfalls of mentoring in creative disciplines this Thursday, 22 January.

The debate, titled 'Everybody Starts Somewhere - Sometimes Great Ideas Need Direction', examines the duties of established designers towards fostering and encouraging new talent. It takes place at the Slaughtered Lamb, London.

Quinton, a Black Pencil winner and creative director at leading agency The Partners, was announced as the new Education Chair at the start of January and has already spoken about the importance of fostering students and young designers, particularly in a tough economic climate.

In his first announcement as Chairman, he said: "As for those of us lucky enough to have jobs now – no matter what the current situation with recruitment, we need to keep meeting students and new graduates, crit portfolios, and see what new talent is out there. New creativity is always incredibly valuable. The grey clouds of recession will not last forever and we’ll all need new talent when the sun shines again, sometime in the future.”
