Expo: Iomega announces EMC's Retrospect 8

Iomega is showing off EMC's Retrospect 8 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. The latest update to its cross-platform backup solution introduces a number of new features.

We caught up with Chris Romoser, Senior Director, Worldwide Communications & Public Relations at Iomega Corporation who took us through a demo of Retrospect 8.

Retrospect 8 has been completely re-worked for the Mac, and for the first time Iomega has designed the Mac version in advance of the PC version. It is the successor to Retrospect 6 for the Mac, as Iomega explained there are two parts to the program: the engine (which has been to version 7) and the interface which was up to version 6 on the Mac.

“This new engine is universal” explained Iomega, “because it runs as a deamon on OS X, Linux or Windows. The engine runs in the background all the time, on top of that is the Aqua interface, which is 10.5 and Snow Leopard although the engine will run on older Macs.”

This means that users can install the engine on an older machine and run the user interface on a 10.5 machine to manage it.

Retrospect 8 offers a wide range of backup solutions and enables you to drill down into specific files and folders, as well as create smart backups based upon specific operators. Users can back up to a wide variety of formats including optical disc, tape and files. Users can now back up to hard drive locations, such as external NAS drives, without having to wipe the drive and dedicate it to Retrospect.

There are three versions of the software available, a desktop user version designed for the home, a single server version designed for small and mid-size businesses and a multi server version designed for mid-size businesses running more than one server.

A public beta of Retrospect 8 for Mac is now available. Click here to visit the Retrospect site and download a copy.
