Apple releases keyboard firmware update

Rolling out a firmware update at the same time you're telling everyone about your record sales and profits for the just-completed fiscal first quarter doesn't strike me as the best way of getting the word out about your updated software.

Nevertheless, that's exactly what Apple did on Monday with its release of Aluminium Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1.. And with $15.68 billion in quarterly revenue to its credit, Apple probably isn't actively seeking out my advice on how to time these things.

Apple releases keyboard firmware update

So for those who understandably missed the firmware release amid all the earnings hubbub, Aluminium Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1 promises to improve the battery performance of the wireless version of the input device introduced by Apple in 2007 when you use it with other Bluetooth devices - a Magic Mouse, say, or certain kinds of wireless headsets.

The 1.1 update also tackles an issue with both the wireless and wired versions of the aluminum keyboard where a key might repeat unexpectedly when you type.

Apple has a support document with further details about the Aluminum Wireless Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1, including details on downloading and installing the 1.52MB update and determining whether the update has already been applied to your keyboard.
