No UK pricing yet but Apple finally acknowledges iPad outside US

Despite a wealth of media coverage of the iPad launch on Wednesday, if you visited the Apple UK website since then you might have not realised Apple's new iPad was going to be released outside the US.

Yesterday, Apple was still flagging up the 27-inch iMac on its UK home page as the must have new toy, with no sign of the diminutive iPad anywhere.

That has now changed - a succession of iPad images now appear when you visit the Apple UK website although clicking on pricing only reveals US dollars.

"Wi-Fi models shipping in late March. 3G models shipping in April. UK pricing to be announced," Apple simply notes.

Those looking to pre-order the iPad will have to wait. You can sign up to be alerted when UK pricing and availability is released on the Apple page. "If you’d like to be notified when iPad will be available to order, just enter your email address in the box to the right," it says.

Links to iPad-related videos of Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Apple senior vice president of industrial design Jonathan Ive can also be accessed via the home page.

Record iMussolini downloads for iPhone app on Holocaust Memorial Day

An iPhone application devoted to Benito Mussolini, one of the key figures in the creation of Fascism, has been criticised after record downloads on Holocaust Memorial Day.

iMussolini beat blockbuster games including Avatar on the Italian iTunes App Store on Wednesday 27th January. That date was chosen for the Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD), as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp - Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The application offers biographical information and a chance to read hundreds of speeches, along with video clips of the dictator in action. Mussolini ruled Italy from 1922 until his death in 1945 at the end of World War II.

The man behind iMussolini defended the iPhone application. "It’s a delicate page in our history that should never be forgotten,” Luigi Marino told Bloomberg News. "I’m stunned by the success of the application. I’ve had complaints, but also lots of positive feedback asking me to keep updating."

Typically, a Milan-based spokeswoman for Apple declined to comment.

Available from the Apple iTunes App Store, iMussolini costs 59p and requires the iPhone 3.0 Software Update or later. iMussolini is presented in Italian only.

Survey: Developers crazy about Apple tablet

Application developers are eager to start building software for Apple's expected tablet, according to a new survey from Appcelerator, a maker of developer tools.

Nine out of 10 of the 550 developers surveyed by Appcelerator said they were "very interested" in creating an Apple tablet application in the next year, said Scott Schwarzhoff, the company's head of marketing. "Developers are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the tablet," Schwarzhoff said.

That's true even though the details of the tablet are unknown, Schwarzhoff continued, or when compared to interest in other, more established platforms. While 86 per cent of the developers polled said they were interested in developing for the iPhone, and 68 per cent said the same for Google 's Android mobile operating system, the tablet came in third, with 58 per cent, more than double the 21 per cent who named BlackBerry and more than three times the 17 per cent who voted for the Palm Pre.

"I think there will be a lot of frenzy over the tablet, a lot of experimentation by developers," Schwarzhoff said.

Developers crazy about Apple tablet

Unlike other pre-launch clues, including metrics from devices being used on Apple's Cupertino, Calif. campus , which have pegged e-book applications and games at the top of the likely uses, the developers polled by Appcelerator were interested in a wider range of software. The top five categories for tablet development were business/productivity, entertainment, social networking, education and games, in that order.

Click here to view the Apple Tablet event Live Feed

"The biggest point is that developers don't see the tablet as just all about games," said Schwarzhoff. "Developers are thinking of the table as its own unique experience. Software doesn't have to be a mobile app, doesn't have to be a desktop app. The successful ones will realize that they can take some of their learning from mobile and some from the desktop, and experiment with something in between."

It wasn't a surprise, then, that the top vote getter for anticipated tablet features was local data storage, with multitouch second and multitasking fourth.

"If you're an indie developer, this is a train you're going to jump on. You're going to be all over this, either as new app opportunities or conversions from iPhone apps," Schwarzhoff said. "But businesses and ISVs [independent software vendors] will likely go 'Hmmm ... this is a third platform. I already have mobile and a Web site to maintain, help me understand and rationalize what I should be doing.' "

Because of their popularity, especially on other mobile platforms like the iPhone, Schwarzhoff expects to see social networking software and applications with local uses almost immediately on the tablet.

Appcelerator will add the APIs (application programming interfaces) for core tablet features to its Titanium framework as soon as possible, assuming Apple releases an SDK (software developers toolkit) at the same time it reveals the tablet.

"For the most-requested features, we can [get them into Titanium] within a couple of weeks to a couple of months," said Schwarzhoff. Appcelerator hopes to add support for the most-requested features -- including multitasking, any advanced multitouch gestures that the tablet offers, and tablet-specific user-interface components - almost immediately. Assuming Apple releases an SDK, Appcelerator plans to make public its tablet support timetable on Thursday.

Frequently compared to Adobe Air, Appcelerator's Titanium lets Web developers create native iPhone, Android, PC, Mac and Linux applications using JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

Apple releases keyboard firmware update

Rolling out a firmware update at the same time you're telling everyone about your record sales and profits for the just-completed fiscal first quarter doesn't strike me as the best way of getting the word out about your updated software.

Nevertheless, that's exactly what Apple did on Monday with its release of Aluminium Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1.. And with $15.68 billion in quarterly revenue to its credit, Apple probably isn't actively seeking out my advice on how to time these things.

Apple releases keyboard firmware update

So for those who understandably missed the firmware release amid all the earnings hubbub, Aluminium Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1 promises to improve the battery performance of the wireless version of the input device introduced by Apple in 2007 when you use it with other Bluetooth devices - a Magic Mouse, say, or certain kinds of wireless headsets.

The 1.1 update also tackles an issue with both the wireless and wired versions of the aluminum keyboard where a key might repeat unexpectedly when you type.

Apple has a support document with further details about the Aluminum Wireless Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1, including details on downloading and installing the 1.52MB update and determining whether the update has already been applied to your keyboard.

Amazon boosts e-book royalties ahead of Apple's tablet

Amazon.com said on Thursday authors and publishers will get a higher royalty on books using the Kindle Digital Text Platform (DTP) starting 30 June.

The new 70 per cent royalty more than doubles what Amazon currently pays in royalties. The increase was widely seen as Amazon.com's attempt to pre-empt the impact of Apple 's entry into the e-book market with a new tablet device that many believe will be announced next Wednesday .

Amazon boosts e-book royalties ahead of Apples tablet

Google has also announced a Google Editions e-book concept that should launch later in the year, using a variety of devices.

Amazon could not be reached for comment immediately, but said in a statement that an author would make $3.15 on today's standard option on an $8.99 book, or slightly more than 30 per cent, which would increase to $6.25 with the new 70 per cent option.

The 70 per cent royalty will exclude delivery costs, based on file size that is priced at 15 cents per megabyte.

The standard option will continue, and to qualify for the higher 70 per cent option, books must be priced at between $2.99 and $9.99 and initially will only apply to books sold in the U.S. It is unavailable for books published in the public domain, before 1923.

Apple offers its application developers a 70 per cent royalty on apps sold in its App Store, which includes some digital books.

Google is planning a 63 per cent royalty for Google Editions. Authors of physical books typically receive royalties in the range of 7 per cent to 15 per cent of the prices set by publishers, and about 25 per cent of the net amount that publishers receive from retailers of their digital books, a Kindle official said in a statement.

Macworld, Digital Arts and Wacom team up for Twitter campaign

Macworld UK and Digital Arts have teamed up with Wacom to create a Twitter-based community (known as @TabletChat) that pulls together conversations about graphic design, and tablet-based design in general.

"For us, this is an alternative to the traditional approach to publishing" said Macworld UK's editor in chief Mark Hattersley. "Instead of us pushing news stories at people, and companies placing adverts around that news, this is more about us searching for - and stimulating - discussion about a topic that lots of people like us are naturally interested in. So it's more about us trying to kick-start a conversation and seeing where it goes."

The plan is to use Twitter to search for conversations about graphic design, and to integrate this conversation with a Twitter feed while at the same time using our Web sites to ask our readers what they think about graphic design.

Every day Macworld and Digital Arts will run a question about graphic design, and the answers will be collected into a series of running polls.

Where it gets interesting is that these polls enable people to tweet their thoughts directly from the Macworld and Digital Arts website. These tweets then appear on the user's Twitter site, and are retweeted on the @tabletchat Web site.

This is early days, and a bit of an experiment for us. But we've had some great comments so far, such as:

"There is no 'copy & paste' in the analogue world of pencil and paper. Imagination and talent rule. via @andrewbriden"

"Think the best thing is it's purity, and a basic form of art that everyone can do, young and old. via @psdesignuk"

"Hand-drawn art is showcasing your "REAL" skill whereas digital art is too artificial. If only hand-drawn had Undo & redo. via @@junn_tan"

Our Twitter community has also come up with great examples of graphic design, and lots of advice on how to get the most out of tablet design.

If you have a penchant for graphic design, and like using tablets to draw in general, then pop on over to @TabletChat on Twitter.

We don't store any of your details incidentally. When you use the poll your login details are redirected to the Twitter website and we used the official Twitter API to create the poll.

Epson now supports printing applications for iPhone, Android smartphones

Epson has announced global support for its open-source development kit, the ESC/P-R library, which assists product designers wishing to develop printing applications for electronic devices. With the kit, developers are able to support most Epson inkjet printers worldwide with just one driver insists the company.

ESC/P-R is a common language for selected Epson inkjet printers that supports every media type, paper size and associated printing mode available on those products. ESC/P-R allows many kinds of devices to connect and communicate with Epson printers, especially suited for consumer electronics devices and embedded equipment.

The ESC/P-R development kit has already been utilised to develop printing applications for the iPhone, iPod touch, and for phones using the Android operating system, Epson notes.

ePrint by Microtech and Epson’s own Epson iPrint are available from the Apple iTunes App Store, while CyCom Technology CyPria application is available for download from the Android Market.

All of Epson’s Wi-fi capable all-in-one printers launched this year will support these applications.

According to Epson, ESC/P-R language is designed to be easy to develop and maintain, as it removes the necessity to create and update separate drivers for each printer. It enables speedy printing of high quality images even from devices with a slow CPU, and does not require dedicated image processing memory.

Information on Epson’s universal printing and supported printers can be found here.

iPhone leads way as UK spends £170m on mobile games in 2009

Apple's iPhone and mobile partner O2 led the way in getting mobile gamers to pay for games in 2009 a new survey reveals.

Data from the mobile section of the UK National Gamers Survey Report conducted by TNS and Gamesindustry.com, revealed that 3.8 million people played games on mobile phones and spent a total of 170m in 2009.

Apple had about 700,000 mobile gamers with an impressive 85 per cent paying for games via the iTunes App Store. O2, previously Apple's exclusive UK partner, had 2,400, 000 gamers with 67 per cent paying for games.

According to the report, market leaders in terms of number of mobile gamers, Nokia and Sony Ericsson had 38 per cent paying players, identical to operator Vodafone.

Three quarters of paying mobile gamers had a contract opposed to using prepaid cards. For all mobile gamers this is more equal - 57 per cent on contract, 43 per cent using prepaid - the survey suggests.

The new report found just 14 per cent of UK mobile gamers play daily. This goes up to 18 per cent for people who have paid for games.

Between 15 and 60 minutes of game play was typical of the average player. Popular types of games include puzzles, strategy, racing and arcade games.

Arcade games and puzzles are clearly most popular with non-paying gamers the report found, with several coming pre-installed with handsets.

41 per cent of all mobile gamers has played more than 3 different games in the last 6 months. 16 per cent of paying mobile gamers, 600,000 people in absolute numbers, can be seen as the heavy users playing more than 25 different games in a 6 months period the report suggests.

Apple Tablet won't launch until June - analyst

The Apple Tablet may not launch until June, according to an analyst.

Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu believes that issues with battery life and durability may necessitate a delay.

He warns that we may see as much as a six month delay before the device hits the shops, somewhat akin to the launch of the original iPhone.

Wu is sure that the Tablet device will be announced at the event on 27 January, however. "From our understanding, it is not intended to replace a Mac but be somewhat of a 'super' iPod touch where video, gaming, web browsing, ebooks and the ability to run multiple apps would be enhanced with the much larger screen," he told Apple Insider.

Wu expects that WiFi is more likely than 3G for network access.

China: Google cyberattack investigation includes employees

Google's investigation of a cyberattack that rocked the company's infrastructure in mid-December includes a probe of its staff in China, a source familiar with the investigation said on Monday.

The U.S. search giant last week said it had uncovered a “highly sophisticated and targeted attack” coming from China on its infrastructure that resulted in some of its intellectual property being stolen, Google said in a blog post.

Google cyberattack investigation includes employees

The attack on Google's servers in December targeted the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Google said it had decided to stop censoring search results in China, which could lead to the shutting down of the search engine and operations there.

Google is considering possible employee involvement in attacks as part of a thorough investigation, the source said. However, Google does not consider the attack an inside job, as 20 other companies were affected by similar intrusions originating from China, the source said. Companies including Adobe and Juniper have said they were targets.

Intel adding new Atom processors to Classmate netbooks

Intel is updating its Classmate PC netbook models, adding new processors and shrinking the devices to make them sleeker and easier to carry.

The chip maker's Convertible Classmate design, which includes 10.1-inch touchscreen that can swivel to turn the netbook into a tablet PC, is undergoing a complete overhaul, said Agnes Kwan, an Intel spokeswoman. The newer model will be upgraded with faster Atom processors and will be announced in the first half of this year, Kwan said.

New Atom processors are also being added to the older Classmate clamshell design, which does not include a touchscreen. The company announced two new Atom processors in December, the N450 processor running at 1.66GHz, and the N470 running at 1.83GHz.

The new Atom processors are 60 percent smaller than their predecessors, and consume 20 percent less power. The chip improvements could make future Convertible Classmate netbooks smaller while giving them more battery life. Intel wants to make the netbooks easier to carry, but also wants to keep the devices rugged so they don't easily break, Kwan said.

Intel is adding more wireless connectivity options to both the netbook designs, including 3G mobile broadband and WiMax capabilities, Kwan said. The company is also investigating larger screen sizes for the Convertible Classmate netbooks, she said.

Intel announced the Classmate PC in 2007 as part of an effort to deliver laptops under $400 to school children in developing countries. At the time Classmate PCs competed with One Laptop Per Child's XO laptop for market share. Intel later expanded Classmate's role as a reference design for PC makers in developing countries to make low-cost PCs.

The last redesign of the Classmate was in September 2008, when the chip maker launched the Convertible Classmate. The addition of new chips should give a new level of graphics and application performance to the Classmate devices.

The new Atom chips come with integrated graphics processors that can handle 720p high-definition graphics, according to Intel. An integrated memory controller will help the processor communicate faster with system components, leading to faster application performance.

Intel on Monday also said that Argentina would buy 250,000 Intel-powered Classmate netbooks with Pineview processors beginning later this year. The units will be distributed in 1,500 schools in 24 states and will be delivered by United Nations. The company also said Brazil and Turkey had purchased Classmate PCs.

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars now available for iPhone

One of the biggest names in videogaming has now appeared on the iPhone, with the release of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is one of the biggest videogame franchises of all time, and its appearance on the iPhone further cements the device's position as a credible alternative to Sony's PSPGo and Nintendo's DSI consoles.

The game is sure to prove popular too, costing just 5.99 on the App Store compared to the 29.99 that both Nintendo and Sony are charging for their respective consoles.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars differs from the full console versions of the game in that it is played in a 3D isometric view. But it was well received by the videogaming press, Macworld UK's sister site GamePro gave it 4.5/5 stating: "it's an absolute blast from start to finish with plenty of trademark Liberty City locales ripe for exploration, not to mention a cast of incredibly memory characters"

The series is known for its black humour and objectionable content, and iTunes asks users to confirm they are 17 or over before downloading the app. It's a hefty download too, weighing in at 188 MB.

Apple hits out over $100,000 Apple tablet bounty

Apple has hit out at a website offering a $100,000 bounty, around 61,300, to anyone from Apple willing to leak details of the company's long rumoured Mac tablet.

Gawker owned lifestyle and gossip blog Valleywag, notorious for revealing salacious news about Silicon Valley personalities, offered the bounty earlier this week.

"Apple has said absolutely nothing about its tablet, but everyone expects it to be unveiled in San Francisco on Jan. 27. So, that gives you to two weeks to play in Valleywag's Apple Tablet Scavenger Hunt: If you can find the first genuine photos, video or — the holy grail — the actual messiah machine itself before then and they're exclusive to us, we'll give you a cash prize."

In the Scavenger Hunt, Valleywag is promising $10,000 for picture evidence of the Apple tablet, $20,000 for video evidence, $50,000 for a photo of Apple's CEO Steve Jobs holding one, and $100,000 to "let us play with one for an hour."

Apple however aren't impressed. Michael Spillner of Menlo Park law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe has written to Valleywag demanding the Apple tablet Scavenger Hunt be taken down.

"I am writing on behalf of Apple regarding the notices on Gawker.com and Valleywag.com Web sites that Gawker Media will pay someone a financial reward for sending you photos, video, or a sample of an unannounced and highly confidential Apple product," Michael Spillner notes in a letter dated 13th January and scanned by the website.

"While Apple values and appreciates vibrant public commentary about its products, we believe you and your company have crossed the line by offering a public bounty for the theft of Apple's trade secrets. Such an offer is illegal and Apple insists that you immediately discontinue the Scavenger Hunt."

Apple hits out over $100,000 Apple tablet bounty

The $100,000 bounty still stands despite Apple being unhappy about the Scavenger Hunt.

Spillner then clarifies why they believe the Scavenger Hunt is illegal and in violation of California trade secret law.

According to Valleywag the letter and specifically the quote: "Apple has maintained the types of information and things you are soliciting ... in strict confidence," is the "most concrete evidence (from Apple itself, no less!) yet that there may indeed be a tablet in the works."

In return for the revelation, Valleywag have sent Spillner a modest reward - "A DVD of Legally Blonde 2, a $25 Zune Marketplace giftcard and a fabulous set of steak knives!" - for his efforts.

"If you've found proof that the Apple Tablet exists and can share it with us, we're still offering prizes," Valleywag's Gabriel Snyder still insists.

"Apple, of course, has plenty of good lawyers like Michael Spillner, so we reiterate our advice 'to stay within the bounds of the law.'"

UK defendants await sentencing in DarkMarket carding scheme

Two UK men have pleaded guilty to charges related to the infamous DarkMarket payment-card fraud ring busted by authorities in October 2008, according to British police.

Renukanth Subramaniam, 33, and John Michael Francis McHugh, 66, both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud in Blackfriars Crown Court in London on Thursday.

DarkMarket was a highly organised, password-protected online forum where criminals worldwide could buy and sell credit card numbers, a practice known as "carding." Since its shutdown, more than 60 people have been arrested by law enforcement agencies in the UK, U.S., Germany, Turkey and other countries.

Subramanian was an "itinerant loner" who was allegedly observed selling lists of credit cards near the Java Bean Internet Caf in Wembley where he frequently accessed the DarkMarket site, according to the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA).

He used a memory stick to carry data around and seemed to think using Internet cafes would help shield his activities, SOCA said.

Subramanian had no fixed address and frequently stayed with friends but had mortgaged three houses, SOCA said. In the past, Subramanian had worked for Pizza Hut and a dispatch company.

McHugh was arrested in December 2008 after investigators found he was allegedly running a counterfeit credit card factory, SOCA said. McHugh, a retiree who lived in Doncaster, England, allegedly had details for more than 2,000 credit cards in his home along with a "suite of images and logos" needed to produce fake cards.

No sentencing date has been set for the men.

FBI investigators spent three years clandestinely infiltrating the DarkMarket forum, building trust with those running the site before making dozens of arrests in October 2008 in conjunction with SOCA and the U.S Secret Service. Investigators said the arrests likely prevented an additional $70 million in payment card fraud.

Twelve DarkMarket suspects were arrested in the UK. One of those arrested was Adewale Taiwo, a Nigerian national sentenced to five years in prison in January 2009 for conspiracy to defraud. SOCA said he admitted to causing 600,000 (US$960,000) of fraud although banks stopped 240,000.

The DarkMarket Web site had more than 2,500 members when it was shut down. Members were carefully vetted by others to try and keep out law enforcement. Members could sell payment card details as well as buy equipment needed to make fraudulent cards.

Intel reports jump in profit, revenue up 875 per cent in Q4

Intel on Thursday reported $2.3 billion in profit for the fourth quarter of 2009, in a strong financial showing driven by an increase in spending on PC and server chips.

On a GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) basis, Intel's net income was up 875 per cent compared to the $234 million the company reported in the same quarter last year. Fourth-quarter 2008 results were affected by the recession and by nearly $1 billion in investments Intel made in Clearwire.

Intel reports jump in profit, revenue up 875 per cent in Q4

The most recent quarterly results beat estimates of $1.92 billion from analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. Earnings per share on a GAAP basis were $0.40 for the quarter.

Revenue for the quarter, which ended 26 December, was $10.6 billion, a 28 per cent gain compared to the same quarter last year. Revenue also beat analyst estimates of $10.17 billion.

Excluding a $1.25 billion payment Intel made in November to Advanced Micro Devices to settle antitrust and patent disputes, Intel's profit for the fourth quarter was $3.1 billion, up 267 per cent year-over-year.

"The fourth quarter was a strong ending to a year with a very difficult beginning," said Stacy Smith, Intel's chief financial officer, in a statement. The company is seeing consumer demand return after a precipitous drop at the end of 2008 and early 2009, he said.

Intel expects revenue for the first quarter of 2010 to be $9.7 billion, plus or minus $400 million, the company said in a statement. The company earlier this month announced its first chips made using the latest 32-nanometer manufacturing process.

The highly integrated Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 chips for desktops and laptops bring better graphics capabilities and system performance to PCs while consuming less power.

The launch of 27 CPUs at the Consumer Electronics Show was the biggest consumer chip launch since Centrino in 2003, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said during a conference call. "Early demand for these products is excellent," Otellini said.

Click here to win a BlackBerry Curve 8520 with Digital Arts' BlackBerry Advisor. Plus: hands on with a virtual BlackBerry Storm2.

The company is increasing manufacturing capacity to make more chips using the 32-nm process. Intel plans to refresh its server CPU line with 32-nm chips in the first half of this year, Otellini said. Intel's current server chips include the quad-core and six-core Xeon chips, made using a 45-nanometer process.

The eight-core Nehalem-EX processor will also be released in the first half of the year, Otellini said. That chip will be manufactured using a 45-nanometer process.

Otellini predicted robust growth in shipments across all chip segments, which should keep its factories at full capacity. Demand for more chips in the channel will be a big factor in reducing manufacturing costs, he said.

Revenue from Atom microprocessors and associated chipsets grew 6 per cent sequentially to $438 million during the fourth quarter. Unit shipments were seasonally high, and revenue from the chips increased on higher average selling prices, Otellini said.

Carriers who subsidize netbooks for sale with mobile broadband contracts are responsible for close to 25 per cent of Atom chip sales. They will continue to be a growing part of the netbook business in 2010, Otellini said.

Intel launched new Atom processors as part of the Pine-Trail platform in December. The platform is in more than 80 designs and is still attracting new ones, Otellini said.

Atom is also making progress on handheld devices, according to Otellini. Intel showed its first smartphone win at CES, the GW990 from LG Electronics, which is based on Moorestown, an upcoming chip platform with an Atom-based processor.

Intel has been cutting staff over the past five years but is looking to add employees this year, Smith, the CFO, said. The company will continue to cut costs by streamlining operations and making areas like manufacturing more efficient.

CES: Screens from former OLPC CTO now in devices

Mary Lou Jepsen and her team at start-up Pixel Qi have their display-screen technology in several products being shown at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and plan to put a DIY (do it yourself) screen kit on the market early this year.

Jepsen, formerly the head of Intel's display division and chief technology officer at One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), has focused on lowering the battery drain by LCD screens and making them useful as e-readers in addition to normal computer use.

The company's first screen, at 10.1-inches, is being displayed by several companies at CES, including in a multi-touch tablet PC from Notion Ink Design Labs called the Smartpad.

Pixel Qi also hopes to make the screen, called 3qi, available to anyone with some engineering savvy who wants to use its DIY kit to switch out their own netbook screen or try to create their own computer.

"We just think it's important to give everyone an opportunity to innovate, especially [considering] our roots at One Laptop Per Child," Jepsen said in an interview at CES, "so we'll be announcing soon a way people can just buy the screens and mod their own notebooks or make their own systems."

Pixel Qi hopes to have DIY kits out by the end of the first quarter or early in the second quarter of this year, she said.

Jepsen's goal is to extend the battery life of laptops to 20 to 40 hours by lowering power consumption by the display screen. She said production of the new screens will ramp up quickly in coming months.

The initial 10.1-inch screen uses LCD technology so it matches current manufacturing procedures, yet costs less to make than traditional LCDs and uses about a tenth of the power.

The screens are designed so people can read them in direct sunlight, turn off the LED backlight to view black and white text, like an e-reader, and offer a fully saturated HDTV-quality colour mode for video.

Pixel Qi used Lenovo Ideapad netbooks at their CES suite to show off the black-and-white mode because the LED backlight on the Ideapad can be turned off, a feature few netbooks offer.

CES: COOL-ER intros new ebook models

Stylish ebook manufacturer COOL-ER has launched two new ebook devices at this year's CES exhibition in Las Vegas.

We caught up with Phil Wood, COOL-ER's Director to chat about the new models.

"The COOL-ER Compact shaves most of the size from last year's COOL-ER model, which we're now calling the COOL-ER Classic but retains the same 6-inch display." said Phil Wood.

Despite the full screen size, The Compact has a smaller form factor than Sony's Reader Pocket Edition (which only has a 5-inch display).

"We've also redesigned the interface" said Phil, "it now has larger icons instead of the list structure we used before". The COOL-ER Compact also has two new arrows button on the front to move pages without using the built-in circular click-button.

It also sports 2GB of onboard memory, which should be more than enough for the largest book library.

The COOL-ER Connect is a touch-screen unit with built-in WiFi. This enables you to sign in to WiFi hotspots and download books and publications when you're on the move. The COOL-ER Connect

One particularly nice touch of the COOL-ER Connect is that the display didn't seem to sport the reflective gloss that ruined the Sony Touch. Although the unit we tested was an early pre-production model.

COOL-ER intros new ebook models

The COOL-ER Compact reduces the size of the ebook without reducing the size of the screen, which remains a full 6-inch display

COOL-ER has also managed to build one the largest bookstore, despite being a smaller company than Amazon or Sony. "There are now over two million books available in our US bookstore" said Phil Wood, "with about one and a half million available in the UK". The range includes all of Google books and many bestsellers. It uses the Adobe Digital Editions to enable purchased content that can be shared with up to five friends.

The company is also looking to provide subscription services to the latest newspapers with its COOL-ER Connect.

The COOL-ER Compact will be available in the UK in the next two months, with the COOL-ER Connect launched in the US soon and brought to the UK at a later date. The original COOL-ER ebook will be rebranded the COOL-ER Classic and phased out.

Acer recalls Aspire laptops after some casings melt

Acer is recalling about 22,000 Aspire laptop computers after customers reported that some models were overheating.

The problem lies in a microphone wire found underneath the notebook's palm rest, which can short-circuit and overheat, according to an alert published on Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Acer initiated the recall after three customers (none of them from the U.S.) reported "light melting of the external casing."

The recalled notebooks are the Acer AS3410, AS3410T, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG. Affected units were sold between June and October of 2009, the Commission said. U.S. customers who believe they may own a recalled laptop can call 1-800-571-2237.

Acer apparently first notified European customers of the issue back in October, saying that the "microphone cable may overheat when extreme pressure is applied repeatedly to the left palm rest," in a note on its Web site.

The company could not immediately be reached for comment. A customer service representative said Friday that affected customers are being contacted via email, but he declined to provide further information on the recall.

CES: Bowers & Wilkins launch stylish P5 headphones and MM-1 desktop speakers

British hi-fi company Bowers & Wilkins has unveiled two new products at CES in Las Vegas.

The company has made its first pair of headphones: called the P5, the headphones features leather earpieces and metal construction for comfort and noise isolating sound.

The P5 headphones also feature Made For iPod certification, and a microphone and in-line remote control button on the headphone cord. Danny Haikin, B&W's director of brand management, said that the materials make for a great design and also improve sound. "Everything that goes into a headphone set affects the sound," he said, and because we're Bowers & Wilkins the design was very important to us.

The P5 headphones will cost around 200, and will be available this month.

The company also introduced the MM-1, a new set of desktop speakers designed to sit alongside your computer. "They have been designed to look great alongside an iMac" said Danny Haikin.

The MM-1 connects to your computer via USB, bypassing the Mac's analogue audio output and using its own built-in soundcard capabilities to produce the best possible sound. The speakers feature two separate drive units including an aluminium dome tweeter for refined treble performance. The MM-1 foregoes including a subwoofer. "We felt that, unless you're a hardcore gamer looking for huge bass to fill the room, you don't need a subwoofer in your bedroom or office" said Haikin "this produces high-quality sound without the clutter".

The MM-1 speakers will be available in February for around 400.

Microsoft won't fix Windows 7 crash bug next week

Microsoft said on Thursday it will deliver a single security update on Tuesday to patch just one vulnerability in Windows.

However, the company acknowledged that it does not yet have a fix for a crippling bug in Windows 7 that went public nearly two months ago.

The expected update will patch a vulnerability rated "critical" - Microsoft 's most serious rating in its four-step scoring system - in Windows 2000. The bug also affects Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, as well as Windows Server 2003, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, but is tagged as "low" for those editions.

"The first thing that came to mind was a denial-of-service vulnerability for the newer [operating systems], and a remote code execution on Windows 2000," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security.

Microsoft downplayed the threat even to Windows 2000 users. "The Exploitability Index rating for this issue will not be high, which lowers the overall risk," said Jerry Bryant, a Microsoft security spokesman, in a post to the company's security response center blog on Thursday.

Storms welcomed next week's light patch load, which follows several months of multiple updates: Microsoft set a security record in October when it patched 34 vulnerabilities in 13 separate updates, for example. "It's nice to have a light month, especially with the uptick in Adobe vulnerabilities," said Storms, referring to a bug in Adobe's popular PDF software that is also slated to be patched 12 January.

Adobe, which last summer committed to releasing security updates for Reader and Acrobat each quarter, will also patch bugs next Tuesday.

Adobe published its own pre-patch notification on Thursday, but as is its practice, declined to say how many vulnerabilities, other than the one now being used by hackers , will be addressed.

For its part, Microsoft is skipping one patch next week, Bryant confirmed: The company will not fix an outstanding denial-of-service vulnerability in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. "We are still working on an update for the issue at this time," he said.

In mid-November, Microsoft confirmed that the bug in SMB (Server Message Block), a Microsoft-made network file and print-sharing protocol, could be used by attackers to cripple Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 machines. Microsoft has maintained that the vulnerability cannot be used to hijack PCs.

The Windows 7 flaw was first reported by Canadian researcher Laurent Gaffie Nov. 11, 2009, just a day after Microsoft shipped that month's patches, when he published proof-of-concept attack code to a security mailing list. According to Gaffie, exploiting the flaw crashes Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 systems so thoroughly that the only recourse is to manually power off the computers.

"From a public [relations] perspective, I would have expected Microsoft to patch the SMB bug this month," said Storms. "On the other hand, I'm not surprised they won't, since it's only a denial-of-service bug."

Microsoft will release the security update at approximately 1 p.m. ET on 12 January.

CES: Asustek unveils netbook that unfolds to big-screen tablet

Asustek Computer showed off its new 'wave' design concept in a few devices on Thursday at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), including a concept netbook that unfolds into a tablet PC and a 47-inch LED TV.

The netbook concept is to have dual 9-inch touchscreens on a netbook, with one where a keyboard is normally located and one as the display. The device has no physical keyboard, instead using the bottom touchscreen for input.

The device can also be fully unfolded into one large tablet screen. An Asustek representative said the idea is to use OLED (organic light emitting diodes) technology for the screen and make it flexible. The design is a prototype and Asustek has no plans currently to take it to market.

Another flexible OLED screen device on display was a wristwatch that is simply a screen about 2-inches wide that wraps around your wrist with a watch on board and other interactive features.

The 47-inch LED TV sports speakers on either side that can slide in or out to save space. The three devices are made to work together. They are all prototypes.

CES: Flying quadricopter drone controlled by an iPhone, iPod touch

Buzzing above the heads of marvelled, camera-snapping media representatives at CES Tuesday was a weird looking, smooth-flying toy helicopter from Parrot that can be controlled with nothing more than an iPhone or iPod touch and appropriate software.

The AR.Drone, a four-rotor “quadricopter” which is controlled by Wi-Fi signals, includes wireless cameras that can stream video to a iPhone or IPod touch, thus allowing you to use your actual surroundings as “targets” in a “augmented reality” (that’s what the AR stands for) video game. Want to take out those mean goldfish? You can hover the copter nearby, focus on them with the wireless cameras, target the dangerous beasts and “fire” away.

The copter, made of carbon fiber and PA66 plastic, can be used outdoors with the rotors unprotected or indoors with a shield which protects and allows the copter to bump gently against obstacles - like unwary people - without damaging the rotors.

The quadricopter is controlled by accelerometers and an embedded Linux platform originally designed for mobile phones, according to Parrot. The open-source platform is being made available to software developers at CES, the company said. In unveiling the AR.Drone, Parrot said that software for controlling the copter would be available on a number of platforms, not just the iPhone and iPod touch.

At CES Unveiled, a press-only event, the purple and black AR.Drone buzzed around near the main entrance, drawing a steady stream of wide-mouthed still and video photographers. People were able to walk fairly close to the unit, which was able to hover solidly in a single position and then fly off smoothly. The AR.Drone has a top speed rating of about 11 mph and weighs 12.7 ounces without the protective hull and 14.1 ounces with it.

The unit runs on a necessarily lightweight, three-cell, 1,000 mAh lithium polymer battery. It has a 15-frame-per-second (fps) front camera as well as a high-speed (60fps) vertical camera that looks straight down. The four 15-watt rotors spin as fast as 1,500rpm.

Parrot is better known for its Bluetooth devices such as wireless stereo speakers and handsfree automotive gadgets. It bills the AR.Drone as the “first helicopter with automatic flight stabilisation.”

The unit will be available later this year, the company said. Pricing has not been set.
